WES had a community read where the entire school read Fish In A Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. The theme is that everyone is good at something and no one is an expert at everything. If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its life believing it is stupid.
Every child designed a fish to put in the tree. Each fish was representative of the child – highlighting interests and personalities. Mrs. Mayo’s room made life size representations of the major characters with descriptions and book highlights.
The activity was designed to help children learnthat people are more than the labels that other people give them, and that having confidence and perseverance can overcome many obstacles.
