At the beginning of March, Superintendent Gary Smith issued a challenge to help all of RSU 18’s staff increase physical activity and build habits of wellness. The Superintendent’s Fitness Challenge (SFC) is just one part of an ongoing initiative to increase staff wellness by promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Participants were asked to put together 5 to 8 member teams, select a team name and team captain, and record their active minutes for each reporting period. Active minutes include “any bodily movement above and beyond walking around your classroom,” can be split up over the course of the day, and can range from walking the track at lunch to participating in sports.
According to nutrition director and SFC monitor Will Hamilton, 168 staff members signed up in 23 different teams, and had logged a total of 142, 000 active minutes by the end of the first two weeks of the challenge.
The response from the participants has been so positive that there are already plans to expand the SFC and similar programs in the future.
