On April 12, 2018, Messalonskee Middle School held their first Health & Wellness Fair. It was an exciting day of learning for our students. Our fair had 16 booths set-up in the gym for students to visit throughout the day. We had people from all around the community donate their time and expertise to help educate our 500+ students on various topics. The following is a list of presenters who made this day a success:
MCIR-Brain Injury Prevention, The Maine Dairy Council with the NFL Fuel Up to Play 60 program and Cabot Cheese, Above the Influence- Being Drug Free, KBH- Substance Abuse Prevention, Happy Trails Trail Mix Station, The “Ugly, Green Smoothie” Taste Testing (with students tasting Mrs. Croteau daily smoothie), CDC- Lyme Disease Prevention, NAMI- Suicide Prevention, Glo Germ and Hygiene Station, OutMaine, Mental Health Awareness, Inland Hospital Let’s Go 5-2-1-0 Sugar in drinks display, Internet Safety, Family Violence Project- Healthy Relationships, The Finance Authority of Maine, and The Dempsey Center- Skin Cancer Prevention.
Students were each given a small paper bag to collect items from the booths that they visited. They also had a passport which was stamped at each booth that they visited. Our students were able to choose which booths that they wanted to visit throughout their time at the fair. Student passports were collected after each session for a raffle drawing of health-related items. It was a fun learning experience for students, staff and presenters. Ms. Croteau was the driving force in making the MMS Health & Wellness Fair a rousing success.
This fun Health & Wellness Fair was made possible through the following grants and support:
Drug Free Community (Healthy Northern Kennebec Coalition), Action for Healthy Kids Game On Grant, Go Go Squeez, NFL Fuel Up to Play 60, Cabot Cheese, Lakes Region Dental, and the RSU #18 School Nutrition Program.
