Students at ATW and WES will have a special guest over the next two days thanks to funding by their PTA. Maine author and illustrator Kevin Hawkes, has produced over 50 picture and chapter books including the New York Times bestseller Library Lion. He will be spending today speaking to students at Atwood and will be presenting at Williams tomorrow. Classroom teachers and library staff have been reading and promoting Hawkes’ books in preparation for this visit.
Mr. Hawkes will be presenting to small groups in the library throughout the day. He will talk about his writing and illustrating process and create original drawings which will be raffled off to the classes. Title one funds, combined with a contribution from the Library, made it possible for the schools to purchase a Kevin Hawkes book for each student at each school. Atwood students will receive copies of Library Lion and Williams students will receive copies of Weslandia, all signed by the author.
“It’s an amazing opportunity for the schools and a great collaborative effort on the part of the PTA, Title 1 and the Library,” said librarian Kathryn Bailey.
There will also be a Title 1 school-wide event held in the WES gymnasium from 6-7 on Wednesday, October 24th. All ATW and WES students, families, and staff are welcome to attend.
