WES students in Ms. Sucy’s class have been using a hands-on, and rather delicious, math strategy lately. They have been using Cheez-Its (one square inch) to help them determine the area and perimeter of shapes.
Students used Cheez-its to cover a rectangle or square, then counted the outside of each Cheez-it to find the length of each side of the shape to solve for the perimeter. To find the area, they used a few strategies. One strategy was to count all of the Cheez-its inside of the shape. The other was to group them and use repeated addition or multiplication to solve for area.
This activity was highly engaging because it not only involved a snack but also gave students the opportunity to do some hands-on learning with math.
