In conjunction with Belgrade Central’s Global Play Day, the Title 1 program also invited parents of students in first and second grade to come in with their children from 7:30 to 8:30 AM and read a story together. After the story, families played a game or completed an activity based on the math concept featured in the story.
Six stations were set up around the room. Parents and students could stay with one book and complete several activities or move to a new book and new math concepts. A few examples of concepts in the stories were sorting, time, and sequencing. The story 3 Little Firefighters requires sorting by attributes, laying the groundwork for understanding number patterns and identifying geometric shapes.
A similar parent involvement activity for students in grades 3-5 is planned for the spring.
