Reading at JHB

James H. Bean kicked off “Read Across America” and it’s “Dino-mite” Book Fair on Friday, March. 1. The day began with Mrs. Hill, Literacy Interventionist, and Sharon Cormier, Math Interventionist, hosting a parent event that offered math and literacy activities all centered around the works of Dr. Seuss. Ten of our Title 1 students were represented by at least one adult.

Our day continued with a fun-filled Rise and Shine assembly. Students shared what they knew about this beloved author, and cheered on their teachers as they were challenged with a fast-paced, competitive “So You Think You Know Seuss?” Kahoot game. Students and staff came with book baskets full of their favorite Dr. Seuss titles as the assembly ended with a whole school read in. The day continued with Mrs. St. Peter, “Mrs. Cat in the Hat”, visiting classrooms to share a story from Horton and the Kwuggerbug and More Lost Stories

During the week of March 4, JHB hosted the Scholastic book fair.   Over 82% of our students and families purchased items at this event. Additionally, JHB was able to provide funding to ensure all students were able to choose a book to add to their home library.

As a result of the sales from the book fair, our school earned over $1,300 to be used to support programs and buy materials for the James Bean School. None of this would have been possible without the help of the many parents and teachers who volunteered their time to work shifts at the fair. These volunteers were invaluable in helping our youngest readers create wish-lists of book titles and make purchases. Thank you to all who made this event such a success!
