This year, Messalonskee Middle School students had a great time participating in the Maine Student Book Awards (MSBA) through the MMS library.
Each spring the MSBA committee compiles a reading list based on recommendations from students, parents, teachers and librarians around the state. Participating students in fourth through eighth grade who have read at least three books on the list then get to vote for their favorite. All votes had to be in by April 1st.
MMS librarian Rebecca Cobban hosted an MSBA party in the library on May 1st to reveal the top choice for the school, how many total books were read by MMS students, and the winning title for the state of Maine. MMS students chose Grenade by Alan Gratz as their favorite MSBA book. This year’s State first prize winner was Refugee by Alan Gratz, second prize went to Restart by Gordon Korman, and third when to The Witch Boy by Molly Ostertag.
Ms. Cobban also gave a prize to the MMS student who had read the most MSBA books this year. Sixth-grade student Alex Wyatt won for reading over 20 books on the list. Congratulations, Alex!
