The Maine School Counselor Association has selected Messalonskee Middle School’s Kris Croteau as Maine School Counselor of the Year for 2019!
According to their website, “The Maine School Counselor of the Year Award honors the best of the best – counselors who are running a top-notch, comprehensive school counseling program.” This describes Kris perfectly!
During her 12 years at MMS, Kris has developed numerous programs that support staff, students, and families and has been instrumental in finding funding for many of them. She brings in guest speakers to present to students on everything from civil rights to career pathways. She hosts activities like the Student Health Fair and the “In Plain Sight” room to teach parents how to spot indicators of drug and alcohol abuse. She organizes informational sessions and wellness activities for staff members. Perhaps her greatest passion project was starting the MMS food bank and backpack program to help students whose families are facing food insecurities; in everything she does, she is always looking for ways to help the MMS and RSU 18 community.
Yesterday, MMS students and staff gathered together for a surprise assembly to honor this wonderful school counselor and present her with this well-deserved award.
Congratulations, Kris! Thank you for all you do.
