The fifth graders at WES in Miss Hilton’s, Miss Davis’, Miss Cotter’s and Mrs. Moody’s classes, as well as Mrs. Veilleux and Miss LaPointe’s fourth grade classes participated in a Mock Caldecott.
Students learned about the criteria that is used to select a Caldecott Award winner each year. Students read a selection of 8 books during their library time and with their homeroom teachers. While listening to the book being read aloud, students analyzed the illustrations and recorded their thinking about each piece of criteria. Students also had access to the books as Google Slide presentations, so they were able to closely analyze the illustrations while completing the rubric. Students then rated the titles based upon their observations and gave the book a final score.
As a final project, students created a slide that described why their highest rated book may be the Caldecott Winner. They were able to share this slide with the class. Students were able to root for their top rated book as they watched the live American Library Association Award Ceremony.
What a fascinating project! So very proud of these students and, of course their teachers who made this possible. Once again they have gone above and beyond in this trying time of COVID! Thank you.
