Atwood Primary’s morning and afternoon preschool classes have been learning a lot of information about reindeer this month through the children’s very first exposures with close reading. These four and five year olds learned that reindeer live in the tundra and that reindeer eat moss and flowers. Students learned about reindeer features such as antlers, hooves, and woolly coast. They discovered interesting facts learning that reindeer can swim, float, and run up to 50 miles per hour! Mrs. Blaisdell’s classes also incorporated many fictional stories about reindeer throughout the month of December. Books included The Wild Christmas Reindeer by the famous children’s author and illustrator, Jan Brett, as well as the book Dasher, by our very own Maine author and illustrator, Matt Taveres. Some students chose to find books about reindeer during their weekly library time as well! The preschoolers were led through a guided drawing on how to draw a reindeer during small group time… and of course, they sang the well known Christmas carol Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer a time or two! Their reindeer artwork is on display in the Atwood hallways for all to enjoy as they pass by! #WeAreRSU18 #AtwoodAwesome
