Mrs. Gooldrup’s Recycled Orchestra

Fourth grade students at Belgrade Central received copies of the book, Ada’s Violin: The Story of the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay, earlier this school year. As part of music class in March, students watched the 60 Minutes news story on the recycled orchestra and saw Ada in real life. After discussions on what life is like in the Cateura section of Asuncion, Paraguay, students were given the assignment to go home and make an instrument from found materials at home. Students were encouraged to use items from their home recycle bins and if they needed other materials to complete their project, they would need to do some searching around the house – as no items were to be purchased in the making of their instruments. Mrs. Gooldrup has done this project with fourth grade music classes for several years and it is always a favorite lesson of the students. The fourth graders beamed as they presented their cereal box guitars, tin can drum sets, paper tube rainsticks, soda bottle shakers, and so many other creative instruments! #WeAreRSU18
