Fun-filled Literacy Day at Williams Elementary School

By: Principal Smith, Williams Elementary

Yesterday Williams Elementary students and staff participated in a school-wide literacy celebration. Parents and grandparents were invited in for the grade level community read-ins. The Williams staff was so thrilled with the amount of guests that visited their school throughout the morning. Any family member that joined in this special day was entered into a drawing for a chance to win a literacy based game or a book. Family members also left with a few literacy handouts that included 5 Ways to Support Your Middle Grade Reader, Reading at Home Can Make a Huge Difference, and a winter break BINGO challenge due back to school by January 4th. Students who participate in the winter break BINGO challenge will be entered into a book raffle. All students will be sent with an additional winter break BINGO board today, December 21st!

Throughout the day students participated in a variety of literacy activities that included readers theater, read alouds, Madlibs, literacy games, bookmark making, poetry writing, and building blanket forts to read in at the end of the day!

Here’s what the third grade students enjoyed most about this special day:

Kiana – “My favorite part of the day was spending time with my family at school and showing them around my classroom.”

Will – “I loved it when the parents visited and we got to read with them. Jess won Apples to Apples which she loved!”

Brady – “I loved reading with my dad.”

Isabella – “I loved reading in the library with our special guests.”

Without a doubt, the best part of this special day was spending it with our families.  We appreciate our families taking time out of their busy schedules during a hectic time of year to read with us. #WeAreRSU18 #WESproud18
