WES Launches Reading Challenges

Williams Elementary School is launching two reading challenges in the next few weeks.

The Williams Elementary School library is excited to offer the Portland Sea Dogs Slugger’s Reading Challenge. Students who read five books between now and March 21st will win a free ticket to see a Sea Dog’s game in April or May! Other members of the student’s family may purchase additional tickets for just $6 each.

Additionally, the Sea Dogs will award cash prizes to the schools who have the highest rate of participation.

Forms and information will go home with students on January 14. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call the Williams Elementary School Library at 465-2965. ext. 3109.

The Read to ME Challenge launches at the beginning of February and is a month long challenge promoting childhood literacy. According to the Maine DOE website, “the simple act of reading aloud to a child 15 minutes a day for five years results in 27,375 minutes of language exposure which can put children on the path to high literacy achievement.  Reading aloud exposes children to the world around them, helps them see reading as an enjoyable and valuable activity and often strengthens bonds with trusted adults.”
