Mrs. Charest and Mrs. Pullen’s second-grade classes made fresh pesto and salads with ingredients harvested from their garden towers last Friday, Jan. 10
Thanks to these towers, purchased through a Maine Agriculture in the Classroom grant awarded to the pair in 2017, second-grade students at Atwood have had the opportunity to plant the tower gardens with pole beans, lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, snap peas and a variety of herbs over the past few years. The classes watch the plants grow, help with the harvest, and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
Students have sampled snacks of different types of lettuce with dill dip, learned how to make pesto, and even taken baggies of parsley home to dress up a family meal. This week, students will be enjoying English muffin pizzas using basil and green peppers grown in the towers. The classes have also given lettuce and basil to the kitchen staff for the whole school to enjoy during lunchtime.
Whether it’s simply expanding their palates, or giving them the opportunity to take a hands-on role in growing their own food, the towers provide so many valuable lessons for our students.
