Our 5th grade students have spent time writing two shorter pieces of writing since finishing up their narrative writing unit about small personal narratives. Students wrote a descriptive piece about their favorite traditions or activities that take place in November. We used the mentor text In November by Cynthia Rylant for inspiration and idea generation. Students also completed a piece of writing using the mentor text I Am Every Good Thing by Derrick Barnes. This piece allowed students to think about and share who they are and how they are unique and special.
Our 4th graders were busy writing persuasive essays prior to Thanksgiving Break — from a turkey’s perspective. Each turkey attempted to persuade the farmer not to eat them on Thanksgiving. I had a blast reading all of these creative pieces and admiring the amazing turkeys in disguise that the students (and some of their family members) created.
