Mr. Schmidt’s 7th and 8th grade classes ended their year by creating a scale model of the solar system. After learning scientific notation and volume and surface area of spheres, we calculated all of the values we needed. The 3D printers at CMS were used to build the actual planets except for Jupiter and Saturn. The students were amazed to see exactly why we don’t usually draw models of the solar system to scale. Eventually we took the planets outside into the school forest. We couldn’t reach them all because Pluto ended up being over five miles away from our two meter Sun!
