Mrs. Ripa’s classes, of Messalonskee Middle School, have recently had the opportunity to study microorganisms in science. With the help of two MEEA Outdoor learning grants, Mrs. Ripa has been able to bring her students outside to collect zooplankton from the school pond under the ice. Students also have been able to go ice fishing! First, at the MMS pond (they caught one fish!) and on Messalonskee Lake with the help of local scientists. The MEEA grants helped to support the use of technology with mobile microscopes that clip to ipads, and with ice fishing gear that will be able to be used for years to come to explore life under the ice and get kids outside in the winter. Mr. Rice also helped gather supplies and facilitate students making their own “Perch Traps” designed by Angela Jurdak. Our students have really enjoyed the experiences! #WeAreRSU18
