Messalonskee Middle School students in Mrs. Ripa’s science class participated in a bridge building STEM challenge! The requirements were: build a self supporting bridge with an arch without glue or tape (only popsicle sticks). This was inspired by Leonardo DaVinci’s design for a self supporting bridge to aid troops in war. The second day of the lesson, students were given DaVinci’s design and challenged to build it; which proved just as tricky as coming up with their own designs! Mrs. Ripa shares, “It was a lot of fun to see students working together, problem solving, tweaking their designs, and trying again and again. Although most didn’t ‘succeed,’ they learned to persevere through a challenge and had fun doing it!”
