Some of our PreK students got to have a fun adventure last month. PreK classes from Atwood, Belgrade Central, and James Bean got a behind the scenes tour of Hannaford as part of an annual Family Involvement Event.
“The children love it and the parents really enjoy it as well,” said Belgrade Central PreK teacher Michelle Lenentine. “They do an excellent job talking to our students about how to find healthy foods in the store by using the stars on the labels.”
In addition to learning valuable nutrition tips, the students and their families get the full tour including the stock rooms and security room and they learn about the various jobs in the store. Students also get to sample a variety of foods in the produce, bakery, and deli area and even get to see and touch a lobster in the seafood section.
“The kids loved the back rooms,” said JHB PreK Teacher Linda Click, “especially the box crusher machine and the forklift to get things off of high shelves.” Another favorite part of the tour is getting to pick their favorite cereal off the shelf and scan it at the checkout so they can hear the beep.
The students are sent home with goodies, good memories, and a little more knowledge about nutrition and the inner workings of their local store.
